How to turn a photo into an SVG

  1. 1Upload a clear photo of one person or one pet, with the face well lit and not too small.
  2. 2Choose a style: a one-colour stencil or a layered colour portrait.
  3. 3Four portrait drafts appear. Pick the one that looks most like them.
  4. 4The final is redrawn in high quality and traced into cut paths.

Why the photo is redrawn first

Tracing a photo directly gives a cloud of specks, because skin, fur and shadows are full of tiny tone changes. Photo to SVG first redraws the photo as a clean illustration with solid shapes, keeping the face, expression and markings, and only then traces it. That's why the result can actually be cut and weeded.

Ideas for pet and family portraits

Pet portrait shirts and tote bags, memorial ornaments, custom mugs, wood signs with a name, family portrait decals, and gifts for grandparents. For a portrait with a name or date, add the text in Design Space after cutting the portrait, or use the AI SVG generator to draw lettering.

Choosing a photo

Use a sharp photo where the face fills a good part of the frame. Front or three-quarter views work best. Busy backgrounds are removed, but a plain background gives the cleanest outline.
